Skin Issues Caused by Pregnancy

Hormonal and physiological changes related to pregnancy can cause various skin conditions to develop. Your dermatologist may be able to create an effective treatment plan to alleviate the associated symptoms.

Although less common, there are a few skin conditions related to pregnancy:

PUPPP (Pruritic Uticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy)

PUPPP develops during the third trimester and is generally harmless, though some patients experience severe itchiness. Hive-like rashes and red bumps appear around stretch marks and/or on the stomach. The rashes and bumps may be localized or spread to the arms, breasts, buttocks, and/or legs. PUPPP has no known cause and treatment usually consists of topical ointments and antihistamines. The condition generally resolves within days of delivery.

Prurigo of Pregnancy (Papular Eruptions of Pregnancy)

A rare skin condition, prurigo resembles a group of bug bites. It may occur anywhere on the body and lasts up to three months after delivery. The onset of prurigo usually isn't before the third trimester and is harmless to the baby and mother. It's generally treated with antihistamines, oral medications, steroids, or topical ointments.

Pemphigold Gestationis (Herpes Gestationis)

Pemphigoid gestationis is an extremely rare condition. It begins as a hive-like rash, which turns into large, blistering lesions beginning on the abdomen before spreading to the arms and legs. The condition causes severe itchiness and typically begins in the second or third trimester. Pemphigoid gestationis may be intermittent throughout a pregnancy. It's associated with an increased risk for preterm delivery and fetal health issues. If you suspect you may have this condition, seek immediate medical attention.
