CoolSculpting

What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a Food and Drug Administration- (FDA) approved, non-surgical procedure that targets pesky fat deposits without harming surrounding tissue. Using special applicators, the targeted area is cooled to a freezing temperature to freeze the subcutaneous fat cells. It’s a popular alternative to liposuction and other invasive fat removal procedures in Boardman and Howland, OH.

How CoolSculpting Works

CoolSculpting uses cryolipolysis, a non-invasive technique that places a fatty deposit between two panels which cool the area to a freezing temperature. Once the targeted fat cells are frozen and dead, they are processed through the liver and expelled from the body during the next few weeks. Areas commonly treated with the procedure are the abdomen, sides, lower back and inner and outer thighs. As the frozen cells are removed, you’ll begin to notice a slimmer profile in the treated areas.

Fat Reduction vs. Weight Loss with CoolSculpting

Many people equate weight loss with fat loss. While diet and exercise are the gold standards for reducing amounts of visible fat, the fat cells themselves still remain. This is because fat cells aren’t eliminated when you lose weight but instead but decrease in volume. Muscle weighs more than fat which is why fit and/or muscular people may weigh more than those with visible fat deposits. CoolSculpting helps patients achieve a more slender appearance by reducing up to 25 percent of the number of fat cells in the treated areas.

What to Expect from CoolSculpting

If your goal is to get rid of stubborn fat with CoolSculpting, you can expect to see visible results within three weeks. Recovery time from the procedure is little to none for most patients, and daily activities can be resumed immediately. Your dermatologist with Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center will schedule a follow-up appointment afterward to review results and discuss whether further CoolSculpting is necessary for other areas of concern.

Who Is A Good CoolSculpting Candidate?

Though CoolSculpting is a non-surgical procedure and has a shorter recovery period than traditional fat removal procedures, this procedure isn’t for everyone. Generally, good candidates for CoolSculpting:

  • Are Near Their Target Weight: This procedure does eliminate fat deposits but isn’t a weight-loss surgery. CoolSculpting focuses on specific areas of the body and though multiple treatments can result in weight loss, it shouldn’t be specifically used for weight loss.
  • Understand How CoolSculpting Works: Good CoolSculpting candidates will have realistic expectations for what the procedure will accomplish and whether it’s an appropriate approach for their desires and goals. During the consultation, an Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center dermatologist will thoroughly explain the procedure and clarify any concerns or questions you have to make sure you understand how CoolSculpting works.
  • Are In Good General Health: Side effects related to CoolSculpting are usually minimal but one of our dermatologists with Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center will typically recommend the procedure for people in good general health. During your consultation, your medical history, chronic conditions or illnesses, or any other health-related concerns will be discussed.
  • Have Enough Fat Deposits For The Procedure: For CoolSculpting to be effective, you need to have a certain amount of fat deposits in the targeted area. Otherwise, the CoolSculpting device is unable to grab and suction enough fat for freezing.

CoolSculpting FAQs

Am I A Good Candidate For The CoolSculpting Procedure?

A good candidate is someone with stubborn fat deposits in concentrated areas, such as the hips and thighs, and is in good general health.

How Long Is Each Treatment? How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Each CoolSculpting treatment lasts between 35 minutes and 60 minutes, but this may vary based on the number of areas treated during your visit. Before treatment begins, you and your Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center dermatologist will determine how many treatments will be necessary to achieve your goals.

Can The CoolSculpting Procedure Reduce Fat Anywhere On My Body?

Generally no. CoolSculpting treats fat deposits and visible fat bulges in the chin, thighs, front and back of the torso, under the buttocks, and upper arm.

I Don’t Like My Double Chin. Can The CoolSculpting Procedure Help Me Lose It?

Yes. Patients with a double chin can reduce fat with CoolSculpting which also improves neck contours. Most patients see a reduction in a double chin after one treatment.

Where Does The Fat Go? Are The Results Permanent?

Once targeted fat cells are frozen, they are removed from the body through the natural elimination process. Because the fat cells can’t return, the results of your CoolSculpting treatment are mostly permanent. The remaining fat cells can increase in volume if you gain weight after the procedure.

What Does It Feel Like?

Most patients experience cool tingling sensations when the procedure begins followed by numbness in the treated area as freezing begins. Some patients have reported minor bruising, redness, and/or swelling after treatment which quickly fades.

Is The CoolSculpting Procedure Safe?

Yes. This non-surgical procedure was first approved for use by the FDA in 2010 and has been used by millions of patients globally since then.

Who Should Not Have The CoolSculpting Procedure?

Patients with cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria shouldn’t receive CoolSculpting treatments.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Side effects from a CoolSculpting treatment vary for patients and are generally minor. Reported side effects include temporary bruising, redness, swelling, and skin sensitivity at the treatment site.

Can I Return To Normal Activities After My Treatment?

Yes. Many patients schedule a treatment during the work week and return to work immediately after the appointment.

I’ve Had My CoolSculpting Procedure. Now What?

Schedule a follow-up appointment with Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center. During the follow-up appointment, your Boardman dermatologist will discuss your results and whether additional treatment is needed to accomplish your goals. After the follow-up appointment, it’s important to eat a healthy diet and partake in regular exercise to support the permanent results of CoolSculpting.

When Will I See Results?

Some results may be visible within 3 weeks to 4 weeks, but complete results are apparent 2 months after the procedure. You may notice slight but continued results up to 6 months afterward.

Do I Need To Take Special Supplements Or Follow A Strict Diet And Exercise Program?

No. But you can support the results of CoolSculpting, by maintaining a healthy lifestyle which includes eating a nutritional diet and participating in regular exercise.

What Happens If I Gain Weight After My CoolSculpting Procedure?

It’s possible the stubborn fat deposits will return in the areas targeted by CoolSculpting. Or, the weight gain could be distributed to other fat cells in the body. Remember, fat cells expand in volume which creates the physical appearance of fat.
